I used eggcrate to build a box right below where the river ends. The box is filled with river rock. Water goes through the rock, into the basin, and then out holes drilled in the side of the basin to the bulkhead and back to the sump.
Growth will be kept under control. It will be grown in some but I like to keep the tank relatively neat and less jungle like. Just my personal preference.
