Default Tadpole water and food

So I just wanted to see what others are doing when they raise their tads.See if there is anything else I can add to my tad rearing tub . I also think it will help others to know what they can use .So some questions are: What makes up your tad water? What kinds of food do you give them. Do you use color enhancers?

** First lets start with water.**

1. Do you add anything(Indian Almond leaves, Blackwater extract, water clarifier, etc.)to it?

I use the Indian almond leaves just because i like the fact that not only does it add tannins to the water but it also provides a little extra food source for the growing tads. I also use water clarifier.

2. What kind of water do you use(R/O, Rain, Spring)?

I use R/O to make my tad tea and then mix the tea with Spring water. I like the water to look a yellow/brownish color. No to dark and no to light.

3. How often do you do water changes?

I do water changes 2 times a week.

4. Do you test for proper PH?

I like to keep my PH at or around 7.0. I have used water with a PH of 7.4 before with no problems.

5. What temp is the water in your tad cups?

I am not sure what the temp is in my tad cups but the temp of the bins they are in are usually between 72 and 74 degrees, even at night.

**Let's move onto food.**

1. What Kind of food do you feed your tads?

I use a variety of foods and they consist of Tadpole bites, Tropical fish flakes, Spirulina and Chlorella algae's, Indian almond leaves, and Freeze dried blood worms.

2. Do you use any color enhancers?

Yes.

3. How often do you feed?

I feed my tads every other day. This usually makes the water dirty thus the reason i do 2 water changes a week, but it keeps my tads nice and healthy .

I look forward to reading about how you all raise your tads.

I never use RO water...I believe that tadpoles utilize the trace elements in spring or tap water. The reverse is true.I believe that the RO can be dangerous to the tads due to the absence of same.

I never do tad water changes, only top off water. I think this approximates the natural way.

Here's another question...what size containers do you keep your tades in.....me....5 1/2 oz solo cups.....1 each.

I use tubs and containers. For my thumbs i use 16oz containers and raise then individually. For any tincs or larger species i raise them communally in tubs. The tubs are basically drawers to a Sterilite stackable drawer system. Works good. Have some Leuc eggs about to hatch any day now. Ill post some pics soon of my setup. I wanna get a good amount of pics before I upload.[color="Silver"]

I agree, but I also feel doing water changes is necessary. I was into Reef and the ocean is way more temperamental to changes in water chemistry. Doing water changes on reefs, helps remove any non beneficial bacteria and chems that may keep corals and inverts from growing properly. Just because its not natural doesn't mean its not good.

1) I use filtered water from my water filtration system I have here at the house with almond and magnolia leaves. I use 4 oz portion cups until they grow legs to morph, which then I use larger containers with magnolia leaves to ensure they come out of the water properly. I never do water changes but I do suck out the waste with a syringe and replace the water with filtered water. All tad water is at room temperature, although a a few degrees higher can naturally increase growth.

1a) I never use rain water for my animals. Pollution is a huge factor that I can live without. Acid rain and hard sediments can be found in rain water. ( http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasc...0/wea00044.htm ) Food for thought.

2) Feeding. I usually feed pond scum ( http://books.google.com/books?id=v-Q...esult&resnum=8 ). and/or Omega One fish pellets from Petsmart. The Omega One, yellow container, is high in vitamins and nutrients, as well as high in vitamin A and Omega 3 fatty acids.

3) PH levels: I think it is unnecessary to check PH levels as adding fresh water and removing waste material will neutralize the water as it ages. I also feel that there are ways to get around doing water changes altogether and never worrying about PH levels all together. Using reverse Osmosis water and Java Moss will help you in your quest. Reef tanks as well as fresh water tanks must keep desired levels, depends on the fish as well, in order toi maintain fish, etc for long periods of time. Reef tanks and fresh water tanks do not usually have inhabitants that can live in still water with no filtration systems. Tadpoles have a higher tolerance level than most fish and can handle variations in temperature, acidity, PH levels as long as they are corrected in time. Most fish I have dealt with can not tolerate these changes and as a result die due to stress or complications of it. With tadpoles removing factors like waste and adding filtered or reversed osmosis water will or should eliminate these issues (if they are watched and maintained correctly).

It's all good. There's just not enough members here yet to get a lot of people's attentions to the site and one particular thread. It just takes a little time. You'll see it more and more, even on some my own threads here. Take a good look around the site and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Thanks Mereck. That's some good information. I plan to try the Omega. If any one hasn't read the links in Mereck's post, you should. No more rain water for me.
