Default New 6'x3'x30"h Vivarium Build

I am currently working on my new enclosure. I have been waiting for the tank for the last 4 months and it finally arrived last Friday. The tank measures 6'L x 3'W x 30" high. I'll be posting pics as I find time to work on it.

---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:50 PM ----------

Here are a few pictures of some of the items I have been coolecting for the build. The tiles are 16"x16":

The log in the last pic is approx 24"L x 14"w x 30"T.

Here are a few pics:

This is the shell of the stand from my 270g reef tank. I cut the stand down about 8" to accomodate the additional height of the dart frog tank. The tub on the right is a grout mixing tub that will be used for the catch basin of my river that will run through the center of the enclosure.

This is the beginning of the false bottom. I used 1 1/2" PVC cut at about 2"'s to raise the eggcrate of the bottom. The eggcrate will be covered in garden weed prevention screen to keep the soil in place,

The picture is the tentaive placement of some of the items I have been aquiring over the past 5 months. The green block of strofoam will be the river running through the enclosure. I'll make another post outlining how I made the river(borrowed the idea from another member).

Here is a pic of the setup with the garden cloth over the eggcrate. All I need now is the tank and I can start landscaping.

Here are a few shots of the river build:

I started with a foam block that measured 4' x 2' x 6". Here it is carved and covered with black silicone.

Then I pressed in some river rock gravel and let it sit for 24 hours:

These are the rocks I used. I rinsed them first to get out any debris and remove the dust so they would stick better:

Then I covered the outer portions with the black silicone and covered it with coco fiber:

16 coco bricks, 5 orchid bark bricks, 2 bags of rock, and a bunch of plants later.......
Here are some new pics:
Tank finally on stand!!!!

I have a few more items to add, I'm waiting for the top to be finished, and hopefully by this weekend I'll be able to transfer the frogs into their new home.

I have alot of awesome broms, begonias, some cypress knees, and cork bark left over. I'll probably be posting some of the extras for sale in a week or so(once I am sure I will not be using them).

Let me know what you think.

Tank looks nice! Just curious where does the river flow to? Looks like straight into the bark. I also noticed you used Dynaflex 230, how does it compare to GE Silicone 2? I have a 55g that I want to setup, but am afraid to because if I have to move, it will be a big pain in the ... to move. Again, I like your new Viv.

It was built for the group I currently own, so 3 species(2 different morphs of auratus, my leucs, and the azureus/tincs).

If you are trying to start a mixing debate please do not. This is a build thread. There are numerous other threads about my mixing if you feel the need to make comments.

The river flows into a catch basin. In the last pic you can see some river rocks and the water flows into them and goes down into the catch basin and out the bottom of the tank back into a sump. There is no standing water just the slow flow down the river.

I have used Dynaflex on alot of builds and I really like it. It setsup and cures very fast and seems to stand up to the test of time extremely well. I have not used the GE Silicone so I cannot give a comparison.

Bryan,

You are right, this thread should not degrade into a mixing thread and I will also be someone who will commend you on a very nice build....looks fantastic and it's inspiring to others.

Please accept the eventuality that should you place all those frogs into that viv and post on various forums......people are going to have comments and opinions on all your postings.

Even Dendroboard...as you well know....will never allow you to just throw up threads, images, postings or even live cams, carte blanche without any discussion, rebutal, comment ect.

You can post your build thread with a fantasic large viv and be envied by many....or you can go to the 2.0 version of your other viv and except to have to see the same postings and responses.

May I reccomend your own private web page or website where you can be assured of no responses, comments ect ? It would save us all a lot of time and energy.

Ya I really like your viv, it makes me want to build up my 55. Cant wait to see it grown in a bit. Again super nice viv. One thing is the basin filled with rocks? I always enjoy these threads as it gives me new ideas on viv building.

I used eggcrate to build a box right below where the river ends. The box is filled with river rock. Water goes through the rock, into the basin, and then out holes drilled in the side of the basin to the bulkhead and back to the sump.

Growth will be kept under control. It will be grown in some but I like to keep the tank relatively neat and less jungle like. Just my personal preference.

I would add leaf litter and rooted plants for a healthier tank and remove the Moai, Ganesha and other nicknacks ( not exactly indigenous to any dart areas , and strictly an aesthetic preference ). And the wood 'pilings' sticking up may be of better use if you used them to construct a visual barrier or something for them to hide in . Standing straight up like that really does nothing for the frogs themselves. I would also follow up on the second and third run of fecals to ensure that nice new viv does not get possibly contaminated.

We all know how we all feel about what's going in this tank.
