Default Before I begin construction.....

I have a questions about Hydroton (leca), the clay ball substrate.

1.) How heavy are they? Example: covering an average 10 gallon tank w/ an inch of the clay balls. 10 oz? 10 pounds?

2.) Over time, will they eventually form into a solid brick later on down the road?

3.) Over time, will they become brittle and break-off into little pieces?

Just curious. I'm looking at alternatives. I may have found one.

Thank you for your attention.
Brian

Ten views and one smart ass post...

1. Lightish, that's what they are made for. Heavier than a malted milk ball, lighter than a grape.
2. No.
3.No.

Next time , maybe wait for more than single digit views before you rebuke others for not helping you immediately.
Your welcome for the answers to your questions BTW...

Hi Brian,

1.) Leca is not heavy at all. The amount used to cover the bottom of a 10 ga may be just a few pounds. Way lighter than gravel.

2.) No if not kept in standing water. I have had tanks set up for years with 2-3 inches of leca. In some of my tanks, particularly the ones with standing water, the leca HAS begun to break down. It is not a solid layer, but just beginning to "chip up". (BTW-I only leave my tanks set up for a few years before I rebuild them)

3.) Again, No if not kept in standing water.

What is your alternative?

FYI-Our community is growing, but still rather small. Although it has been a few days, only a few people viewed your post. Some of which may have been guest. If you want a little quicker response, maybe let us know in the "Shout Box", Hopefully you can get help a lil faster.

Hang in there.
