Just a few things that I thought we could post and share info on. Feel free to add other things related to this. Keep in mind this is simply building backgrounds
How do you make 3D backgrounds? What type of foam do you use? What type of silicon should we use and avoid? Use of egg crate? |

It's funny you actually answered one of you question because you make 3D backgrounds out of the things you mentioned.
-With the eggcrate you buy from lowes or HD you measure the area you want. You use great stuff also bought in Lowes and HD and spray it down on the eggcrate. You have to wait 24 hrs before you can add the silicon which you should use brown GE 100% silicone. Avoid the chalky type. Then you can use what every substrate you want to add to the silicone. Here's a few pic to help you out... I didn't use eggcrate for this viv though ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Nice job socaled. Just curious to know if you use any type of substrate under the moss. Someplace for micro fauna or springtails to thrive.
As for using DAP foam. I suppose you could use the it, seems like the same thing as GS. As long as you allow it to thoroughly dry, then coat it with silicone it should work. Re: How do you make 3D backgrounds? I would recommend you find an old 10 gal at a tag sale or swap meet to practice on. What type of foam do you use? Dow Great Stuff What type of silicon should we use and avoid? Just make sure it is 100% silicone. I use GE Silicone II in either black or brown. Use of egg crate? You can use egg crate to spare the use of so much foam. Or as a false bottom. You can get as creative as you want. Here are a few of mine: The pics aren't in any specific order. Just grabbed a few outta my Webshots.com album. Just one method I used in the past. Made the foam look like tree trunks. These were 30 agl breeders. They never really had a chance to grow in. I cracked 2. The other is awaiting orders. Marc

Yup there is substrate underneath the moss it's just coco fiber but to tell you guys the truth I prefer a false bottom any day of the week.... Nice Vivs Knoxter I like how you used the Dap to make tiers and used the whole tank.... Hey neurotic tell me if you really want a viv just Pm I have a production line going on right now with 29 gallon...

As for backgrounds GS is not always needed. You can use corkbark panles, tree fern panels, and cocco panels. All work good(never used but have buddies who do). When planted you wont really even notice the paneling unless you make it stand out.

That is so true Sam shoot I see people in other forums brag about how nice their background is and then cover it up with all these plants LOL it's like wasting time. I think if you have wood around the background it would then be worth it.
