You do not have to have a drain. It is very convenient if you have a misting system. If you hand mist, you can always use a turkey baster or small plastic tube to siphon off the excess water.

Won't hurt. You can always put a bulk head in the hole and plug it. Then take the plug out at a later date when you need it. Easier to have the hole and not need it, then to need it later when the tank is all set and planted.

I have one of those 9.99 pumps so that i can stick into a compartment in my tank to pump out water into a bucket. Hole in bottom of the tank is not needed and most of the time if done wrong can ruin the tank if not done properly.

You do not have to put the hole on the bottom. You can actually put the hole in the back, or front, of the tank and put a drain valve. This allows you to set the level of water you want to keep on bottom of the tank and drain it as necessary.

I'm setting up my first viv but I'm going to try a pump in the false bottom that I will only turn on to pump water out. The pump is small enough to fit in the false bottom and during trial worked, will be the way to go without drilling the tank.
