Hi guys. I have the standard black and yellow leucs. But, I wanted to know if the different leuc morphs out there are from different reigons in Venezuela, thus having different morphs. I really like the fine spotted leucs and the all banded leucs better than mine. But I wanted to know are these different morphs some sort of hybrids people created thru selective breeding or are they legit color morphs.

oooh this is a touchy subject in that people get all riled up because of hybrids... traditionally hybrids are considered to be two of the same species but different locals.... Some people will actually interbreed orchids to get different color patterns and more drastically a different flower... Now with Leucs breeders can breed them for fine spots or thin bands but to my knowledge they are not hybrids just the bread winners of this particular species.... It's like getting the best out of dogs... Thank the PEAS... they're the ones that started it all...

I am not positive on this subject but have read some things on it. I believe Rich just posted a reply about this in the Hybridization of PDF's thread. I think the answer you are looking for is there.

BTW-Is "hybridization" or "selective breeding" really the same thing. I will ask that in the other thread.

The simple answer is no, leucs are not hybrids unless they have been bred with another species.
There are Venezuela and there a British Guyana leucs. They are separate morphs/locals obviously. I believe the fine spots are simply selectively bred for that trait. Aaron H. has commented on the "green foot" and I believe he stated those were also a separate local. Not selectively bred. I'm not positive though on the green foot. Selective breeding for traits from pure morphs/species is not hybridizing. It is on the opposite end. Check out the "hybrid thread" mentioned. Rich

I agree with Rich, hybridization is crossing two species not two locales of the same species. The leucs do differ in appearance geographically. The standard yellow banded leucs are from Venezuela and the banded leucs are from British Guyana. The green foot bloodline in the USA are ones from Charles Nishihara and a few other iitially imported in the late 1990's. They are actually blue foot leucs that faded to green after a few generations of captive breeding. Currently in the hobby, the ones that are from this line have very little foot color at all, but it is a distinct locale. The small spot leucs are also a distinct locale same with the green banded leucomelas.

Well at least now I have my terminology corrected, but when I said in line bred, I meant in the hobby not necessarily in the wild. BUT it all makes sense to me now since the correction. Thanks.
