Default Empty 55 gallon

Hi I have an empty 55 gallon tank and i'm planning on putting dart frogs inside. I had a few questions. I want to know which type are the best to start off with and how many would comfortably fit inside of a 55 gallon long tank. Also if anoles could share the habitat. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Wuz up groki21! and welcome to DFF. According to my short time in owning poison dart frogs I recommend and most will probably agree with me that the Dendrobates auratus, Dendrobates leucomelas( I own 2 of these great frogs!!), and Dendrobates azureus are great starter dart frogs. They are the most common and easier to care for dart frogs.

A rule of thumb that I learned is 1 frog for every five gallons but there is always other factors to go along with this for example how many males to females or mixing species which a more experienced frogger can explain.

And finally about mixing anoles I will again leave that to a more experienced frogger to answer hopefully. They have helped me here when I started and hope they will do the same for you. Hope my little feedback helps and good luck.

thanks so much for the reply and the advice. I will be doing some research on the types you recommended. One question though, with all of the humidity is there a mildew type of smell that would fill a room?

Negative, your vivarium should be completely sealed to retain humidity and keep fruit flies from getting out since thats dart frogs main diet. A glass lid that opens and closes should be used so no type of bad odor or mildew should be present. There are many substrates that are ideal for dart frogs that do not give off bad odors or cause mildew. Since I myself am pretty new in dart frog keeping I use cocofiber as substrate with a little sphagnum moss on top to keep a viv. thats pretty natural(like a mini earth), it actually gives a pretty pleasant odor in my opinion. This is pretty basic, simple and works for me. Once again good luck and hope this helps.
