We are interested in getting a few frogs and had a few questions. There is a reptile show coming up next weekend in Columbus, OH, so I was thinking about taking my daughter up with me to pick out a terrarium and maybe a pair of frogs, plus supplies. What type of terrarium is easiest to care for? I do have tanks at home that I could set up, and it would be a good learning experience for her and I to set up and care for the tank, but I completely suck at setting up stuff like this. I used to have red bellied toads years ago, and did set that up myself, but used coconut bark, and now I see this is inadvisable to use.
So, where do I start? LOL I'd like to start out with a 20 gal long. What is the best bottom to use? moss, plants, etc? Is there a terrarium-building-for-dummies??? LOL Eventually I would LOVE to set up the unused 55 gal and make it a show tank. I know mixing species is in-advisable, so we won't even go there, and I won't even be attempting the larger tank until we have good success with the smaller tank. So, can someone point me to a good starting place? What would be better, building my own or buying one already built? Is a built one going to cost me 10x what it would to build it on my own? Also, our house sits at around 71-72 degrees, and this tank would be out of direct sunlight. I've kept and bred rams, cichlids, bearded dragons, chameleons, and other things, so I'm not a complete newbie at taking care of hard-to-care-for species, but I really would like to start out with something fairly easy, at least til we get our feet wet. Thanks in advance for any and all help!! |

20 gallon is perfect to start
2 - 3 frogs is the best population 69-78F is ideal with a 5 degree drop at night if closer to 80F Go to the reptile show in Columbus....there will certainly be 2-4 dart frog vendors there. Talk to them ALL and ask tons of questions. The ones that are "busy" or don't seem to want to help....move on from them. The one's who spend an hour instructing you on husbandry and vivarium issues - buy a hundred dollars of frogs from, as they are the good guys. That show should answer a ton of questions for you....

There are only four door speakers so I am not sure if that will be enough. Are tweeters hard to install? I don't know if I need them but I would like to hear the words and not just bass, but they seem much more complex to install.
