Hello!
I bought a 20 gallon long semi-established tank from someone, and was supposed to have 2 dendrobates leucomelas and 2 dendrobates auratus (green and black) in it. But when I got home I did some rearranging of things in the tank, and only found 3 frogs (2 leucs, and 1 auratus). Later on that same day I was looking at the substrate she had had in the tank and found a dehydrated froggy corpse looking thing, so I assume it was the 4th. I'm not sure what happened with that one. ANYWAY... 1 of the leucs is bigger than the other, and he or she is doing really well. The tiny leuc is doing okay as well. BUT the green and black auratus hides all the time, and when I feed them I don't know if he/she is eatting, and seems to be skinnier than the others. My question is... is this normal? Can these 2 kinds of frogs be kept together, or should I move the auratus into a tank where its just him/her and maybe get another one for a friend or what. I'm not sure what to do. Or if I am overreacting :/ ... so any help would be great! I'd attach pictures.. but it's not letting me... Thanks! ![]() |

Short answer....whoever sold you those frogs did not do you or them any favours.
Beginning hobbyists should not attempt mixed species vivariums and you should not have frogs together that are much bigger or smaller. They should really be a similar size and same species. I would seperate the frogs ....get them into thier own tanks.

So I have to take the black and green out, and put it in another home all by itself, or put all 3 in 3 separate tanks? Can I ever add more?

Hey Allyson, I am glad to read that you were able to get a second enclosure for your shyer Dendrobates auratus. Have you been able to locate a vendor near you whom you can purchase a friend for your black and green? Try to determine if you have a male or a female and provide the opposite sex as a companion. Hopefully a tank mate will settle him/her down from climbing to the rim of the enclosure.
Good Luck! C |
