ive seen pics on the net of paludaiums that people have made and the water in the tank stays clear, i know with my vivs that i have ponds and waterfalls in the water stays root beer colored because of the tantic acids in the soil, and no matter how much you change the water is always turns back dark. anyone know how to do this and keep the water clear.

This tank had about 4" of water in the bottom of the tank. I had holes drilled in the bottom of the tank that was ran thru a very fine filter. I changed the water every few days but it still turned brown. I have no idea what to do. I am not big fam of water features, but I am about to make a new paludaium and I could the same advice your asking for. I figure it's about time for a new show tank.

Actually i've asked this question in the past because I used to set up chiclid tanks with drift wood and to tell you the sad truth you can never really get it a 100% crystal clear because drift wood is like tea it will always seep color... The only thing is that the more water volume you have in your tank the clearer it looks.... As you do more water changes it will eventually start to clear but again like I stated it will not be 100% clear... If you get lucky some people that sell their chiclid tanks comes with drift wood with java fern and it's perfect for adding to a paladarium it doesn't leak as much as a new piece of wood... The pics you see on the net have wood that are old and seeps less than it would have fresh.... Good luck with the project.

Off the top of my head, the only real way to get that water to be clear is to hook up another filtration system to systematically clean the water at a higher rate than what the waterfall puts out or get a pump that can handle the water flow, but this will lead into other problems, flooding or saturating other areas. Etc. But the more I think about it the more I think about aquatic fish tanks. Light, bacteria, algae, acids, ammonia, etc. are apart of the process of fish tanks, so doing partial water changes with high powered pumps I would think would be the solution to root beer colored water but you never get the water completely clear anyway.
PS: I found this site to be very informative about the brown water phenomena FishGeeks :: View topic - poiromaniax's biotope descriptions But then again I am so tired and can't sleep I am not even sure what I wrote made sense, so I apologize now.Damn SocalEd beat me to it. I took to long to reply. lol

I didn't beat you to anything Merek..LOL.. You always put links (helps a lot) which I never do because i don't have any but just from some experience some avid aquarious will actually treat driftwood, I don't know with what because i was never interested in spending more money than I have to but I'm thinking some sort of acid like vinegar to help speed up the process... but I know it's time consuming.... Look on craigslist people sell tanks all the time with DW..... And a bonus another tank hehehehehe that's plus...
