I'm the same one ("Wildman") as on dendroboard. Hi from Grand Rapids, MI. I have 4 leuc's for 4 mos now, got 'em from Rainforest Station. They're doin' great, thanks Jim.
Just scored a 29 G tank for free. Any ideas on how to outfit and orient it for thumbs would be greatly appreciated! Look forward to learning lots. |

Welcome wildman !
As far as to outfiting or orienting a 29g for thumbnail's is pretty cut and dry . They like lots of brom's , they'll use the entire tank and really dont need a water area . I dont know what else to offer . You need to construct it around the Thumb's need's .

Hi Wildman,
And welcome to the site. A 29 gallon is a great size for a small group of thumbs. IMO, if you want to make the best use of a 29gal for thumbs, I would recommend that you make it a vert. That is to stand it on one of the ends and add a glass front. This conversion allows the frogs to take advantage of the maximum height the tank has to offer. Here are a few micro verts I made out of 5 gal tanks. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Again, welcome to the site. Marc

welcome to DFF with a 29 gallon I would try do a euro-style viv with no backgrounds and just a bunch of nice broms in the middle with ground plants... I think I'm gonna do something like that... enjoy your stay here and ask any questions that need be answered.

Welcome Wildman to DFF! A 29gal vert would be a really nice for some thumbs. Any idea on what kind of thumbs you are thinking of getting? One thing I didn't see mentioned was leaf litter. All frogs love leaf litter because it creates a hiding place and a comfort zone for your frogs. If you look at members albums you can see some really cool thumbnail Viv's.

Welcome wild. I would agree that standing it on end and adding the glass front would be the only way to go for thumbs. There are several ways to cover the glass back and sides. Right now Great stuff foam covered with silicone and moss or coco shavings seem to be the most popular. Myself I have found a nursery that has large rolls of coco fiber that I cut to size and cover the back and sides with. Either is fine. Enjoy your new addiction.
