Hi Angela,
Welcome to the site. As for being a beginner, we will do what ever we can to help you keep your frogs alive. But you have to ask questions. Remembers there is no stupid question, except the one you don't ask. Regarding looking for a good beginner PDF (PDF=Poison Dart Frog) there are several species of PDF's that are suitable for beginners. D.auratus, D. tinctorius, D leucomelas, just to name a few of the more common ones. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Good Luck,

Thanks! I have been doing lots of research and as I said, the frog that I really want are imitators but because I have never owned snakes/lizards/frogs before, I think I should get a larger, forgiving species. I posted an ad for leucs, bold auratus and small tincts (obviously not together in one tank) but if you know of a good local breeder I would be very grateful!
PS. they are trying to sell leucs and a green and black auratus for $100 EACH at my LFS (saltwater lingo Local Fish Store, but also works as Local Frog Store), they were also housed together in a very small aquarium which they were also putting the impression that that was their permanent "home"... Couldn't have been more than 10 gallons square. |

eldalote2, I will share something with you. While I am not suggesting that you go out and get any imis right away, I will tell you that it is not that hard to keep most PDF's alive. IMO if you can keep enough fruit flies alive to sutsain your collection, you can keep your PDF's alive. A simple set up in a standard aquarium, covered with glass (to raise the humidity) and a light fixture (mainly for the plants) will do for most frogs. You can get as complicated as you want, but most of what you want will probably not be necessary for the frogs. Just aesthetics for you.
And yes, the prices your LFS has leucs and auratus for sale at is ridiculous. Check out some of our sponsors, most of them have good beginners darts regularly.

You should check out to see if there is any shows thats coming your way. Its always nice to get any animal from a breeder instead of a pet store that doesnt know what they are doing. I think there is one this month in florida in tampa i think.

I'm going to the National Reptile Expo in Daytona, Fl in August. Hopefully I can get some good starter frogs there for good prices. I'm going to get my tank (maybe tanks hehe) set up and get some cultures going, ive heard starting the ff cultures is the hardest part! I'm really not worried about keeping the frogs alive, cant be as hard as saltwater fish!
