I like to remove my pups when they have about an inch of stock fromt he main stem. I cut them as close as i can to the main stem without cutting into it. Works for me.

Tips:
The leafy crown of a pineapple is a puppy, and that can be removed and planted to start another plant.
Bromeliads only flower once - once the plant stops producing leaves and produces its flower, it will not start making leaves again.
New seedlings are produced, known as pups, which remain in the mother plant until they are large enough for the roots, and become an independent plant.
Puppies are usually, though not always, found near the base of the plant within the leaf sheath. The mother may sometimes survive a generation or two before finally dying.
Long lasting blooms bromeliads are normally 2 to 3 months.
It tolerates a wide range of light and temperature, which is ideal for indoors.
These plants bloom in a wide variety of colors and are easy to clean. Almost thrive on neglect.
They have very few insects or pests.
